Her Majesty's Minister, Peking, to Officer Administering the Govt.
Copy
Sir,
Peking, 26th April, 1890.
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's telegram of the 14th instant in which you inform me that the community at Hongkong had heard with great regret the news of the death of the Marquis Tseng. On the 20th instant the Tsungli Yamen communicated to me officially a copy of the Imperial Decree issued on the subject of His Excellency's death, and in acknowledging the Yamen's note two days later I took occasion to convey to the Prince and Ministers the expression of regret which Your Excellency had telegraphed on behalf of the British Colony.
I feel sure that this mark of sympathy will be appreciated no less highly by the Imperial Government than by the family of the deceased Statesman.
I have, &c.
